About us

A small publication about tools people actually use

Toolshelf started in 2024 because software recommendations online had drifted away from the reader. We publish 27 guides, reviews and comparisons across AI tools, business software, productivity, marketing, websites and security — all written and edited by people.

Our mission

Help readers pick a tool once and get back to work

Choosing software is a chore. Our job is to shorten it: fewer tabs, clearer trade-offs, an honest verdict at the end.

Test at the price readers pay

We evaluate tools on the plan most readers would realistically buy — usually the cheapest paid tier or a genuinely usable free one — not an enterprise demo account.

Start from the job, not the feature list

Each guide begins with a task: draft a newsletter, invoice a client, track a pipeline. Tools are judged on how well they finish that task.

Say when a tool is not worth it

A recommendation only means something if we are willing to publish the opposite. Several of our guides end with 'stay where you are'.

Date everything

Software pricing changes quietly. Every article carries a published and an updated date so you can judge how fresh the advice is.

Who writes here

The people behind the desks

Priya Nair

Editor, AI & Automation

Priya has spent a decade writing about software for people who have to use it, not sell it. She covers AI assistants, automation and the unglamorous work of making tools fit an existing workflow.

Marcus Bell

Senior Writer, Productivity

Marcus writes about task management, note-taking and focus. He is sceptical of any system that requires a good week to work and prefers setups that survive a bad one.

Dana Whitfield

Business Software Lead

Dana has run operations at two small companies and now reviews the software that keeps them going: CRM, invoicing, payroll and support desks.

Leo Vargas

Marketing & SEO Writer

Leo covers search, email and content tooling. He is most interested in what a small team can maintain each week without a dedicated marketing department.

Hana Kimura

Security & Privacy Writer

Hana writes about password managers, VPNs and privacy tooling, with a preference for advice that reduces risk rather than raising anxiety.

Our editorial standards, in short

No paid rankings, no invented testimonials or statistics, no aggressive pop-ups. Where a link earns us a commission, we say so and it changes nothing about the verdict.
